Loneliness in women is linked to craving for sugary comfort foods!

1713504738550 1024x674Social isolation, often perceived as loneliness, has been shown to affect overall well-being. Loneliness is associated with unhealthy eating behaviors, obesity, physical and psychological disorders, and cognitive decline, increased risk for early death and chronic dieases, including cardiovascular diseases. Loneliness leads to increased sugar consumption and cravings for sugary beverages, as a coping mechanism.

A study conducted by Zhang X et al., recently published in the journal “JAMA”, reported that female participants who were lonely may have lack of motivation, control, and processing of internal states with respect to foods. It may result in increased abnormal eating pattern, obesity, and psychological issues. (see the Graphic of the study snapshot).
